Coronation Street newcomer Brody Michaelis goes on the attack against Kit Green next week – unaware that the local police detective could be his biological father.
As dangerous Mick Michaelis faces big trouble with the police following his destructive actions this week, troubled teen Brody deludes himself into thinking that his dad is innocent of all charges.
Deciding that Kit is the source of all his family’s troubles, Brody smashes up his flat in a reckless revenge plan. When Kit interrupts him, Brody turns violent by charging at him and pushing him against a wall.
Ryan Mulvey, who plays Brody, recently caught up with us for his first major chat about Corrie and all the drama to come…

Why does Brody target Kit next week?
“Brody has got a lot of hate towards Kit. In Brody’s eyes, Kit is the reason why his family is falling apart because Kit arrests his dad. Brody sees Kit as the villain in his story.”
What is Brody’s relationship with Mick like?
“Brody looks up to his dad. It’s his dad, it’s his superhero, and he loves him so much. Mick has taught Brody how to be like a man – or what he thinks a man is – through his childhood.
“Deep down, though, Brody does have a horrible feeling over what Mick might have done. Even though Mick has these great sides, where he’s a somewhat charismatic man who’s strong and the head of the family, Brody has also had a rough time with his dad over the years.
“Brody has definitely been bullied by Mick as a kid. He’s been told that anything soft and emotional isn’t masculine. That’s why Brody is the way he is – he is quite hard and he doesn’t like letting people in. The person who’s supposed to show him what love is, hasn’t given the greatest example of that.
“Mick has these dark traits inside of him, so Brody knows there could be a possibility of that. But Brody has been so manipulated that he wouldn’t accept his dad is guilty at the moment.”

How would Brody feel if he knew that Kit could be his biological father?
“It will absolutely blow his mind! It’s great because of the complete differences between Mick and Kit, with their jobs and the roles they have in society.
“At the moment, Brody has got so much hatred towards Kit because he sees him as the catalyst for why his family’s falling apart.
“Also, Brody hasn’t always had the greatest relationship with Mick. He hasn’t really received the love that he wanted. That’s why he’s so closed off.
“So Brody would think: ‘Why on earth would I ever let myself open again to another father figure, when the person who is my father didn’t even show me that?’
“I think he’d be very against it and very closed off to Kit, just because he’s so insecure and anxious about getting hurt. He puts on this hard exterior to save himself from that pain.”
What is Brody’s relationship with his mum Lou like?

“Brody and Lou will talk a lot more and they’ve got a closer relationship. Mick was never really home, so he was never really in the everyday family life as much as Lou.
“Brody and Lou are close, but Brody also resents his mum in a way. Lou likes having a social life and she likes having a drink, so she hasn’t been that available for Brody.
“That’s why he’s so independent and he’s got an older head on his shoulders, because he’s got his two younger sisters. He’s had to look after them – and that ages you really quickly.”
How have you found Corrie in general so far?
“It’s been great settling in. Everyone’s been looking after me and I’ve just been having a really good time. You get to know people and I’ve had so much fun on set with everyone.
“I’m such a people’s person, so I enjoy sitting there in the green room and chatting to all of the different actors and hearing about the work they’ve done. As a young actor, it’s just a really inspiring and exciting place to be and to work.”

How does Corrie compare to Hollyoaks, where you played JJ Osborne?
“Obviously they’re both soaps, so in that regard, they’re pretty similar. The changeover between me being on the two shows was pretty quick, but I’m one of those people that just loves doing new things, so I was absolutely buzzing to come over to Corrie.
“Corrie‘s so fast. I mean, Hollyoaks was fast too, but Coronation Street is absolutely crazy with how quick they make the content! Corrie‘s filmed on multi-cam while Hollyoaks is single cam, so that’s quite a big difference with the speed of filming. It keeps you on your toes but it’s fun!”
Did you know the full story of Brody’s family background when you joined the show?
“I feel like Brody was quite a blank space for me. I didn’t really know much information about him, which I prefer anyway, because then you don’t have any rules or regulations when you’re filling in your character.
“When I went to the audition, the briefing was just that Brody was a bit of a bully. I thought it was a fun part, so I’d have fun with it. The chemistry read went well because it was just me and Liam [McCheyne, who plays Dylan]. It was the scene where our characters were having a joint in the STC, so it was a fun one that we could mess around with.

“Even though Brody is a horrible character to some extent, he also is just a teenage lad and he was messing around with his mate in the prison. Because I enjoyed it so much, I think that came across and I was buzzing after the audition. I then got the call to let me know that I’d got the part.”
How would you describe Brody?
“Brody is complicated and he’s got loads of sides to him. He has got this hard shell around him where he’s tough, manipulative, decisive and quite cunning. He knows how to work people, so he’s very clever in a social sense.
“But I wouldn’t say he’s just a tough bully. He’s not going to just threaten you. Brody knows that’s not the type of person he is, because he’s not some huge lad that’s going to wreck your face. He knows how to work people, but in a way, that’s more terrifying because he can worm his way into situations and make you feel like you owe him a favour.
“Brody is really independent because of his upbringing. Everyone’s got a reason for why they are the way they are, so Brody is not going to just be this bully for no reason.
“As the storyline continues, you start to realise that Brody’s clearly not had the best upbringing and that’s the reason why he is the way he is.”

Was it nice to have your first few weeks in the STC before being let loose on the cobbles?
“Yeah, it was nice to do the STC scenes with Liam and the other lads. They’re all about my age and we’re quite similar. We just had fun with the scenes. Hopefully that came across.
“Brody has wreaked havoc from the start and he hasn’t stopped. Now that he’s out of the STC, I think he’ll carry that on. He definitely brings some drama to the Street…”
We’ll see a different side to Brody when he shares scenes with his younger sisters, won’t we?
“Oh, absolutely. No one’s just got one personality or one emotion they feel all the time. Everything is fluid and everything’s changing. So it’s so nice that I’ve got the aspect of Brody’s younger sisters, who he absolutely adores and he’d do anything for them. He’s so protective of them, just because of the missing parental figures in their life.
“Brody becomes their dad or their carer, in a way. It’s really nice to play that softer side to Brody. It feels like a weight off his shoulders when he’s around them, even though he’s trying to look after them. He doesn’t have to put on an act or impress anyone.”
What else can we expect from Brody’s future?

“If Brody were an animal, he’d definitely be a fox. He’s cunning, he’s charismatic, he knows what he’s doing. But people are attracted to him – they like being around him because he’s got a certain funness about him. He’s charming and that’s what I love about him. He draws people in, even though people probably know they shouldn’t get close to him.
“You can definitely expect a lot more from him. He brings a bit of drama to the Street with him. There’s a lot of fight, a lot of stubbornness. He knows what he wants and he’ll get it. And he won’t stop, no matter who’s in his way…”
