Strictly Come Dancing reveals Emmerdale star Lewis Cope will replace Kristian Nairn after the Game Of Thrones star was forced to quit the show for medical reasons

Kristian Nairn Steps Back: Health Comes First

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Kristian, 49, revealed he must step back from this year’s series due to a spike in his vitals, caused by stress and grief. Known for his role as Hodor in Game of Thrones, Kristian explained that while he was physically prepared, unexpected health concerns made participating impossible.

“With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this season of Strictly,” he said. “I was truly looking forward to the journey and I’m deeply sorry to disappoint anyone. I’ll be back on my feet very soon.”

BBC executive producer Sarah James praised Kristian, calling him a “brilliant contestant” and wishing him a speedy recovery. Fans expressed support on social media, with many sending messages of encouragement.

On Thursday, Kristian announced that he had been forced to quit the new series of Strictly for medical reasons

Lewis Cope Takes the Spotlight

Stepping into the shoes of a Strictly contestant at the last minute is no small feat, but Lewis Cope, 30, is ready for the challenge. Best known for his role as Nicky Milligan on Emmerdale, Lewis has also impressed audiences in stage productions, including Billy Elliot: The Musical and Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution.

Lewis described joining the lineup as “swapping the Dales for the dance floor,” admitting he learned about the opportunity while strolling down Oxford Street. Since leaving Emmerdale in 2024, he has remained active on social media, sharing modelling shoots, travel adventures, and glimpses of his personal life with girlfriend Rachel Lopez.

Controversy Shadows the Show

Despite the excitement surrounding Lewis’ inclusion, this year’s Strictly Come Dancing faces serious criticism. The BBC series, once a jewel of Saturday night TV, has been rocked by scandals. From inappropriate behaviour allegations to contestants leaving mid-season, the show’s reputation has taken a hit.

Fans point to past incidents: actress Amanda Abbington called professional dancer Giovanni Pernice “abusive and cruel,” while Zara McDermott reported distressing treatment by Graziano Di Prima. Wynne Evans also resigned after making an unacceptable remark during a press event.

Having worked as both a model and actor, Lewis is no stranger to sharing snaps of his shirtless physique on social media

Female Contestants Outnumbered by Men

This year, female celebrities are noticeably scarce, with only six women compared to nine men in the lineup. Insiders suggest many women are wary of competing due to previous controversies and a lack of changes to ensure safety during training.

The cast features former reality stars like Dani Dyer (Love Island), Vicky Pattison (Geordie Shore), and Tom Skinner (The Apprentice), alongside entertainers such as RuPaul’s Drag Race runner-up La Voix and Gladiator Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. Many viewers have criticized the lineup on social media, calling it “abysmal” and questioning whether Strictly can recover its former glory.

The actor is best known for his performance in ITV 's Emmerdale as series regular Nicky Milligan, before he left the soap in June 2024

Could This Be the Last Series?

Bookies are now offering odds as low as 8-1 that this could be the final series of Strictly Come Dancing. Insiders claim the combination of scandals, controversies, and an underwhelming lineup threatens the show’s future.

Despite these setbacks, Lewis Cope’s entry brings renewed energy. Fans hope his enthusiasm and star power can rekindle excitement, even as questions linger about the show’s direction.

What to Expect

Viewers can expect high drama both on and off the dance floor. Lewis will have to adjust quickly to the rigorous training schedule, while the BBC must navigate the shadow of past controversies. As the series unfolds, audiences will watch closely to see whether the new lineup can restore the glamour and magic that made Strictly Come Dancing a Saturday night staple for over a decade.

For now, all eyes are on Lewis Cope as he takes on this unexpected opportunity—and on the wider cast, which has sparked conversation, criticism, and curiosity in equal measure.
