Steve McFadden, best known for his role as the formidable Phil Mitchell on EastEnders, has been a central figure in the BBC soap since 1990. While his on-screen character faces intense drama — from the iconic “Who Shot Phil?” storyline to a recent mental health arc — McFadden enjoys a surprisingly tranquil life off-screen.
From London to Cornwall
Originally from Maida Vale, West London, McFadden worked a variety of jobs before acting, including labourer, carrot picker, plumber, and builder’s merchant. But away from the glare of Walford, the actor has found a peaceful retreat in Falmouth, Cornwall, where he has maintained a property since the 1990s.
Speaking to CornwallLive in 2017, McFadden described Falmouth as his “second home,” explaining that if it weren’t for his filming obligations in London, the coastal town would be his primary residence. He praised the area for its angling opportunities, cuisine, local ales, and welcoming residents.
“I get down as often as I can. It’s my second home, if it wasn’t for EastEnders it would be my first choice of residence,” he said.
A Coastal Haven
Falmouth’s charm lies in its natural harbour along the Fal Estuary, beautiful beaches like Swanpool, Maenporth, and Gyllyngvase, and its rich cultural scene. The town boasts the acclaimed Falmouth Art Gallery, which houses over 2,000 works including British impressionist and pre-Raphaelite masterpieces.
McFadden is often spotted enjoying local life — browsing Trago Mills, exploring furniture and home accessories, and frequenting the town’s pubs and nightspots. Residents appreciate the actor’s down-to-earth presence, which contrasts sharply with the intense drama of his EastEnders persona.
Property Prices Reflect Falmouth’s Appeal
Falmouth’s allure comes with a price. In 2024, the average house price stood at £418,785, according to RightMove. Terraced homes averaged £343,612, detached properties sold for around £622,784, and flats fetched £361,427. Sold prices were up 5% from the previous year, highlighting the town’s growing desirability.
With its combination of scenic beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant community, Falmouth offers McFadden the perfect sanctuary from the chaos of Walford. While Phil Mitchell may stir trouble on-screen, Steve McFadden has found his calm corner in Cornwall.
