Today, we have major speculation shaking up the Yellowstone universe: CBS may be developing a brand-new spinoff, potentially taking the Dutton family saga in a bold new direction.
You didn’t really think the Dutton family’s story would end with the Yellowstone series finale, did you?
While a spinoff featuring Beth, Rip, and Kelly as they start a new life together has already been announced and is in the works, new reports from TV Line suggest that CBS is developing its own unique Yellowstone spinoff—one that could be quite different from what fans are used to.
This rumored CBS project would reportedly center on Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, who has appeared as John Dutton’s youngest son throughout all five seasons of the original series.
The show’s finale, which aired in December 2024, saw Kayce selling most of the Yellowstone Ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, with the condition that the land could never be developed.
Kayce, Monica, and their son Tate would remain on a small parcel where they’d built their home.
While plot details are still tightly under wraps, speculation suggests this new spinoff would explore both Kayce’s past as a Navy SEAL and his current role as livestock commissioner.
The show could also see the return of Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and their son Tate. If this spinoff moves forward, it would mark Yellowstone’s return to CBS, which aired the early seasons during the Hollywood strikes, and fits into Paramount Global’s cross-platform strategy. This could be good news for fans who don’t have Paramount Network or Paramount+, making the show more accessible to a wider audience.
In addition to the Beth and Rip spinoff and the possible Kayce-centered series, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise continues to expand.
Prequels like 1883 and 1923 have been big hits, and the upcoming contemporary sequel “The Madison” will star Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox as a New York family navigating life in Montana’s Madison River Valley.
CBS’s interest in a Yellowstone spinoff isn’t surprising. The network recently aired reruns of Yellowstone’s first season in prime time, and the ratings were impressive, drawing in new viewers who had never seen the show on Paramount Network.
This demonstrated a strong appetite among CBS’s audience for Dutton drama, even if it means toning down some of the edgier content for network TV.
If the new spinoff goes ahead, it may take on a more procedural format, possibly focusing on Kayce’s work in law enforcement or ranching, with a weekly episodic structure.
There’s also speculation that the series could shift settings, perhaps moving outside Montana to explore new characters and locations, while still tapping into the themes of family, legacy, and survival that make Yellowstone so compelling.
While CBS and Paramount have yet to officially confirm the project, insiders say discussions are underway and early script treatments are circulating, with a potential fall 2025 premiere in mind. Casting details remain secret, but expect a mix of new faces and familiar Yellowstone actors.
Stay tuned—Yellowstone’s next chapter could be just around the corner, and this time, it might be coming to a CBS screen near you!
