MYSTERY UNVEILED!! Kevin Costner Thinks the Yellowstone Characters Deserved a Different Ending

Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone patriarch John Dutton may have met an unceremonious end in the show’s final season, but the star has far from turned his back on Westerns. While promoting his new History Channel docuseries The West, the actor talked to Entertainment Tonight about his perspective on the stories of the American West, including his turn as the Dutton ranch owner in the Taylor Sheridan-helmed series.

“It’s modern-day ranching. Yellowstone was able to capture that so beautifully,” Costner said of the show. “I mean, it’s a bit of a soap opera,” he added, apparently referencing the Dutton penchant for killing off their enemies with, “We should all be in prison.”

Costner infamously bowed out of the (apparently) final season of the series, reportedly in part over issues of scheduling with the production of the first film in his planned four-part franchise Horizon: An American Saga. The initial movie was billed as the first of a two-part theatrical event, with plans for one film to debut in June 2024 and the second to hit theaters that August.

However, the second film was ultimately pulled from theatrical calendars following the disappointing box office take from the first movie. At the time, Costner’s Territory Pictures and its distribution partner New Line Cinema said that the move was keyed to growing the audience for the saga via streaming and on-demand viewing in advance of the second film. Thus far there has been no news of when or if the second movie will be available.

The star, who is also the creator, writer, and director for the saga, doesn’t appear to have given up hope though, telling ET, “[Chapter] Two is done, and I hope to make [Chapters] Three and Four.”
