Coronation Street newcomer Jonathan Howard, who recently joined the iconic soap as Carl Webster, has shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story about how his career path could have taken a very different turn. The 38-year-old actor, who made his debut as the long-lost brother of Kevin and Debbie Webster, revealed that 17 years ago, he auditioned for another role on the cobbles – and it could have dramatically changed his trajectory.
Jonathan, who plays Carl, the son of Bill and Elaine Webster, explained how, at a crossroads in his career, he auditioned for the role of Gary Windass in the Windass family storyline. He didn’t land the role, which ultimately went to Mikey North, but losing out was a blessing in disguise. Instead of joining the Corrie cast at that time, Jonathan decided to pursue training at drama school and attended LAMDA.
Reflecting on the moment, Jonathan confessed, “It was very disappointing at the time because, as a northern actor, Corrie is the main staple of an actor’s diet. To not get it meant I went to drama school, and you have to trust the universe and trust that things happen for the right reason.”
Jonathan’s career eventually took him across the pond, where he appeared in major films like World War Z, Thor: The Dark World, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. More importantly, his journey also led him to meet his wife, actress Elodie Yung, known for her roles in Daredevil and The Cleaning Lady. Had he landed the Coronation Street role, he may not have had the chance to pursue this path – and as he puts it, “I wouldn’t have met my wife if I hadn’t have gone to drama school.”
Now, back in the north of England playing Carl Webster, Jonathan has returned to his roots, leaving behind the glamorous life in America for the childhood bedroom he once slept in. The actor, who’s been living in the States for the past decade with his wife and daughter, finds comfort in being back among northerners, with his family still living in the same village near Southport.
Jonathan also shared a glimpse into his personal life, revealing that he and Elodie have recently moved from Los Angeles to another state for her work. Their shared life in the States, as an international couple, has been a fulfilling chapter, though being back in Lancashire has added a touch of nostalgia to Jonathan’s current Coronation Street journey.
As Carl Webster steps onto the cobbles of Weatherfield, it’s clear that Jonathan Howard’s journey to Coronation Street has been shaped by fate and a series of pivotal decisions. His story is one of resilience, change, and embracing new opportunities, with a touch of northern charm. Fans are sure to see the layers of his character unfold as he navigates life alongside the Websters in the coming weeks.
