Trouble Brewing

For weeks, Alan’s store has been targeted by a group of local teenagers — loitering outside, causing damage, shoplifting, and harassing customers. Despite reporting the incidents to the police, no action has been taken. Alan feels alone and abandoned. His shop — his livelihood — is under siege, and no one seems willing to help.

This episode begins with Alan already on edge. A sleepless night. A silent morning. And a gut feeling that something is about to snap.

Sure enough, the teens return. But this time, it’s worse than before. Loud, confrontational, and increasingly aggressive, they begin to throw things around the shop and mock Alan. When one of them deliberately knocks over a stand of bottles, and another shoves him to the floor, Alan’s panic turns into blind desperation.

A Desperate Stand

Shaken and humiliated, Alan scrambles to his feet. Heart pounding, he grabs a metal bar kept behind the counter and demands they leave. But instead of backing down, the confrontation escalates. One of the teens lunges toward him, and Alan, acting purely on instinct, strikes back.

The moment is brief — and devastating. The teen, 16-year-old Jordan, stumbles and falls, hitting his head on the edge of a shelf. He collapses to the floor, unconscious and bleeding. The other teens flee in horror, leaving Alan frozen in place, the bar still in his trembling hands.

Paramedics are called. Alan, now struggling to breathe and clearly suffering from chest pain and shock, is also rushed to Holby ED alongside the critically injured teenager. What began as a routine day ends in sirens and trauma — and a man’s life changed forever.

Tensions in the Emergency Department

At Holby ED, the atmosphere is fraught with emotion. Stevie, Rash, Faith, and Max all play crucial roles as the situation unfolds. While some staff instinctively sympathise with Alan — a man who felt cornered and acted in fear — others, particularly Stevie, are more critical.

“It’s not our place to decide who was right or wrong,” Max says at one point. “But we do have to treat them both — with the same care, the same urgency.”

Meanwhile, Iain offers support to a shaken teen girl who witnessed the entire event. She’s terrified — not just about Jordan, but about what might happen to Alan. Her version of the story suggests that the shopkeeper didn’t act out of rage, but fear. Still, emotions are running high.

A Shocking Twist

As Alan is stabilised in resus, CCTV footage from the shop is brought in by police. What it reveals stuns everyone: Jordan had slipped and fallen before Alan’s strike landed. The blow didn’t cause the head injury — the shelf did. Suddenly, the story changes. Alan is not a violent attacker. He was scared, overwhelmed, and acted in self-defence — perhaps even unnecessarily, but not with criminal intent.

Still, guilt eats away at him. Alan breaks down in front of Faith, convinced he’s a monster. “I just wanted them to stop,” he sobs. “I wanted to feel safe again. Is that so wrong?”

Unanswered Questions

Jordan remains in critical condition, and his future is uncertain. Alan faces no immediate charges — but the moral question remains. Did he do the right thing? Could he have handled it differently? And what happens next, for both of them?
