A Storyline Tackling Difficult Issues
EastEnders is taking on some of its heaviest storylines yet, and fans are being warned to brace themselves. Alice Haig, who plays Vicki Fowler, has opened up about the “dark” path ahead for teenage character Joel Marshall. The BBC soap is exploring radicalised misogyny, with Joel’s actions pushing his loved ones to breaking point and shaking the foundations of his on-screen family.
Alice revealed that while she couldn’t share exact plot details, viewers should expect tension, drama, and emotional intensity. “Obviously I can’t give away any details, but safe to say it is dark. It does get darker and there’s a lot of drama ahead,” she explained. “A lot of important topics are being discussed and explored. I know it’s a hard watch, but stick in there because it’s worthwhile and it’s a story we need to tell.”
Vicki Fowler Struggles to Reach Joel
On-screen, Vicki has been trying—and struggling—to get through to Joel. She’s frustrated by her partner Ross, who has repeatedly made excuses for Joel and covered up his troubling behaviour. The storyline highlights the challenges families face when a loved one is exhibiting dangerous or extremist behaviour.
Alice described Vicki as a complex character. “She’s so much fun to play. Every time you think you’ve got a handle on who she is, she does something surprising, which is great for an actor.” Taking over the role this year, Alice admitted she only found out about her casting shortly before filming began. “I couldn’t believe it. Oh my God, this is amazing!” she said.
Behind the Scenes: Inside Soap Awards
Alice recently attended a photoshoot for the Inside Soap Awards 2025, where she is nominated for Best Newcomer. She expressed excitement and gratitude for the recognition, praising the talent in the industry. “It’s totally surreal! I’m really delighted, flattered and excited. The quality of the other people—in all the categories—is unbelievable. The acting in soaps at the moment is second to none.”
The star also highlighted the teamwork behind EastEnders, from writing to costume and makeup. “We’re having such a good year. The 40th anniversary, the quality of the writing, the hair, the make-up, the costume. Everybody is just incredible. It really deserves all the praise it’s getting at the moment and we want to keep it going—there’s a real buzz about the place.”
What Viewers Can Expect
While Joel’s storyline is challenging to watch, it has been praised for tackling real-world issues. The exploration of misogyny, radicalisation, and family dynamics makes for intense viewing, as Vicki and Ross struggle to protect their family while confronting uncomfortable truths. Fans can expect gripping drama, emotional confrontations, and high-stakes decisions that will impact multiple characters.
Alice Haig’s Vicki will be central in guiding Joel’s story, attempting to steer him away from destructive paths while navigating her own relationships and family responsibilities. With EastEnders continuing to push boundaries, this storyline is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about arcs of the year.
