This article contains spoilers for Monday’s episode

Emmerdale fans were left baffled following Monday’s instalment, which is available to watch on ITVX, after police exposed Nate Robinson’s (played by Jurrell Carter) killer – and it wasn’t John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).

In recent scenes, the villagers finally discovered that Nate’s body had been pulled out of the lake months after John had killed him.

And ever since, Nate’s ex Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) and his dad, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), have been trying to piece together any clues to try and find his killer.

John has also been left frantically worrying about whether he would get caught out, and up until now, it looked like he was going to get away with it.

During Monday’s drama-filled instalment, the police told Tracy and Cain that they had found Nate’s killer and that he had died, but left a note confessing to the murder.

As Cain quizzed the detective, she explained: “A confession…. Owen Michaels, do you know him?”

Tracy shook her head as Cain asked: “Who is Owen Michaels?”

“Did he kill Nate?” Tracy asked as the officer confirmed, “We think so. The information he has given is consistent with what we know about your husband’s murder.”

“And you’ve charged him because I want him putting away for the rest of his life,” Cain chimed in.

The detective explained that justice wouldn’t be possible because his confession came in the form of a note before he died.

The letter claimed that Owen and Nate had “a disagreement” on the day he left for Shetland and that his death was “an accident”.

Elsewhere in the episode, John gloated to Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) about Owen’s death and told him that he knew him.

In the pub, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) told John, who was meant to check on Owen the day before, that it wasn’t his fault and that he could have already died.

“You knew him, actually,” John told Robert, who replied, “Owen? That Owen? The guys who spiked me and tried to drag me into the back of his van, is the one who killed Nate?”

“You had a lucky escape,” John taunted.

Fans know it was John who really killed Nate and it’s only a matter of time before he gets exposed.
