Prison fears for Ross and Mack in Emmerdale as devious plot goes horribly wrong

Emmerdale is diving headfirst into one of its most explosive underworld storylines in recent memory, and this time, it’s Ross Barton and Mackenzie Boyd who are tangled in the dangerous web. What started as a misguided attempt to save Moira’s farm has now escalated into a criminal enterprise teetering on the edge of disaster — and fans are hooked.

Let’s rewind. Ross Barton (Michael Parr) and Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) stumbled upon a not-so-little secret hiding in Lewis’ loft: an impressive crop of marijuana plants. It didn’t take long for their eyes to glaze over with pound signs. In their minds, this illegal stash could be the financial salvation Moira (Natalie J Robb) so desperately needs. But while their intentions may have had a noble thread, their execution is proving reckless — and very dangerous.

At first, it was Lewis (Bradley Riches) who grew the weed with a compassionate goal in mind: helping those in pain without access to medical relief. His version of the cannabis Robin Hood has a certain charm — he’s not your typical dealer, but a man with empathy. However, Ross, seeing the opportunity, leveraged his position and blackmailed Lewis into handing over control of the operation.

But things quickly spiral.

In a move that perfectly embodies the self-interest simmering beneath the surface, Mack quietly sets up a deal with Ray (played by EastEnders alum Joe Absolom) — a new contact from his shady past. Ray is no amateur; he’s cold, calculated, and carries the kind of menace that makes viewers instantly uneasy. When he steps into the picture, the whole tone shifts from dodgy side hustle to serious criminal enterprise.

Ross, unaware of Mack’s under-the-table dealings, is furious when he finds out. Even more so when Ray shows up in the village, demanding to inspect his merchandise. Ross refuses to cooperate, furious at being cut out of the loop. Lewis, who only wanted to help people, is devastated by the betrayal. Mack, meanwhile, is left stuck between an angry brother, a furious friend, and a dangerous criminal expecting a drug deal.

This chaotic triangle sets the stage for one of Emmerdale’s most gripping showdowns. And just when you think things can’t get worse — the entire stash goes missing.

Cue panic.

Ross is convinced Ray has stolen it. Mack denies everything. But then there’s Lewis… Could he be hiding the plants himself? Whether stolen, hidden, or seized, that much Class B marijuana is a ticking time bomb. It’s no longer about helping Moira. It’s about who’s going to jail first.

And make no mistake: the consequences are massive. Intent to supply? Prison time. And not just a slap on the wrist. If the police get involved — and let’s be real, they usually do — this could mean years inside for all three men. Especially with volatile Ray sniffing around. He’s a wildcard, and if he’s capable of theft, he’s capable of more.

Here’s what makes this storyline so deliciously Emmerdale: the emotional and moral chaos.

Ross, trying to do good, falls back into the darkness he worked so hard to escape. Mack, ever the charmer, lets greed cloud his judgment. And Lewis? A pacifist in the middle of a storm he helped plant — quite literally.

Then there’s Ray. A game-changing addition who brings a gritty edge to the Dales. Unlike the more “local villain” types we’ve seen in the past, Ray feels more dangerous, more real. He’s a threat not just to Ross and Mack’s freedom, but to the entire community if this operation spirals out of control.

With the crop gone, the blame game begins. Fingers are pointed, alliances break down, and trust evaporates. And at the heart of it is a question soap fans love: who will betray who next?

Will Ross and Lewis team up against Mack?
Will Ray turn violent to get what he’s owed?
And will the police soon be knocking on the farmhouse door?

As viewers, we’re watching a car crash in slow motion — and loving every second of it.

What makes this plot so compelling is that it’s not just a crime drama; it’s a morality tale. Every character thinks they’re doing the right thing in their own way. Ross wants to help Moira. Mack thinks he’s making smart moves. Lewis believes in healing. But in the end, they’re all complicit in something illegal — and someone will pay the price.

Emmerdale has done a brilliant job layering this story with emotion, tension, and character-driven chaos. It’s more than a “drug bust” plot. It’s about trust, desperation, and the consequences of walking into the dark thinking you can control it.

And now with Ray in the picture? That darkness just got a whole lot deeper.
