Farewell at the Kabin? Coronation Street Icon Sparks Exit Rumours After 50 Years on the Cobbles 📰💔👋

A major shift may be on the horizon in Coronation Street, as soap legend Jenny Connor makes a desperate move following a cascade of personal disasters—and her decision sparks concern that another street icon, Rita Tanner, could soon be bowing out for good after over five decades.

In the latest emotional episode already available on ITVX, longtime landlady Jenny finds herself completely adrift. Having lost her beloved Rovers Return—after Carla officially signed the deeds—Jenny is now both homeless and unemployed. Her world, once rooted in the heart of the pub, is falling apart. The betrayal that started it all? Her stepdaughter Daisy secretly stole her £60,000 inheritance, setting off a chain of devastating consequences.

Seeking stability and some sort of fresh start, Jenny turns to the one place that’s always been a source of warmth: the Kabin. Sitting in the back room with Rita Tanner, her foster mother, and Brian Packham, the current shop owner, Jenny cheekily inquires whether Brian might have a vacancy at the newsagents. Brian initially brushes her off, explaining that the Kabin is already fully staffed. But before he can finish, Rita—played by the legendary Dame Barbara Knox—unexpectedly interrupts.

Her words change the mood completely.

With a calm but pointed tone, Rita tells Brian that it might be time for her to begin “slowing down.” Though Brian protests, calling her an irreplaceable part of the team, Rita gently but firmly reminds him that even “old cogs wear out” if they’re not allowed to ease up. It’s a subtle but significant moment, one that suggests Rita might be preparing to take a step back after years of loyal service on the street.

Brian, somewhat rattled, quickly turns back to Jenny and offers her the job—clearly giving in to Rita’s unspoken wish for some rest. Jenny is visibly relieved, finally having something stable in her life again after her recent collapse. But while viewers may be happy for Jenny’s small victory, the bigger question looms: is this the beginning of the end for Rita?

Rita has been a cornerstone of Coronation Street since the early 1970s, first appearing in 1972 and becoming a full-time cast member shortly thereafter. She’s been a mother figure to many: Sally Webster, Leanne Battersby, Gemma Winter, and of course, Jenny herself. Her presence on the cobbles brings not only a sense of tradition but also warmth, wisdom, and often much-needed humour. Although she sold her ownership stake in the Kabin back in 2009 to Norris Cole, she’s remained active behind the counter even after Brian took over in 2019.

So what would her departure mean for the show?

With the soap reportedly facing a financial squeeze, a number of high-profile exits have already been confirmed for 2025. Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney), Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), and Yasmeen Metcalfe (Shelley King) are all set to leave—some due to budget cuts, others choosing to explore new opportunities. Sue Devaney’s character, Debbie, is expected to die in a heartbreaking dementia storyline. And Charlotte Jordan’s Daisy is bowing out after just four years.

In this climate of widespread cast turnover, Rita hinting at retirement—however gently—could be more than just an on-screen plot twist. It might signal the slow fadeout of one of Corrie‘s longest-serving and most beloved characters.

Rita’s legacy is nearly unmatched. Her enduring friendships with characters like Audrey, Ken Barlow, and Roy Cropper have been pillars of the show’s emotional core. While her days of romance may be behind her, her role as a confidante and voice of experience continues to resonate with viewers of all ages. And although nothing has been officially confirmed by ITV or Dame Barbara Knox herself, the script’s tone feels like a possible soft launch for a graceful goodbye.

Still, fans shouldn’t panic just yet. Rita’s comments may simply reflect a desire to step back slightly without disappearing completely. A reduced role could allow the veteran actress to remain on-screen, just with less intensity and frequency. After all, retirement from the Kabin doesn’t necessarily mean retirement from Weatherfield altogether.

Whatever the future holds, it’s clear that Coronation Street is entering a season of serious transformation. With longtime characters bowing out and others stepping into new chapters, the show is recalibrating for the next era. But if Rita Tanner really is preparing to leave the cobbles behind, it will mark the end of an era—a bittersweet moment for millions who have grown up watching her bring heart and humour to the screen for over five decades.

Until confirmation comes, all eyes remain on Rita, the Kabin, and what this job shuffle really means for the soul of Coronation Street.
